Meet

Heather Beveridge.

My professional education and training are in Social Work and Medical Anthropology.  I was initially drawn to counselling as a result of my childhood experiences related to being born with a congenital anomaly.  It required frequent doctor’s appointments, surgeries and hospitalizations.  I received excellent medical care however there was little support around the psychosocial challenges (i.e., impact on self confidence, self-identity and body image, bullying ).

For over a decade, I worked at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto with children and families dealing with trauma, chronic health conditions, life threatening illnesses, mental illness, and disabilities.  In 2009, I relocated to beautiful Vancouver, BC to pursue a PhD and I worked at BC Children’s Hospital as well as a non-profit organisation supporting burn survivors/ their families and first responders.  Throughout my career, I have participated in many global health initiatives in Kenya, Uganda, Nicaragua and Russia.

In 2021, I moved to a full time counselling practice to provide support during a time of increased awareness and interest in mental health counselling.  I enjoy working with individuals experiencing a range of challenges in life, and working together to improve their overall quality of life.

My Therapeutic Approach

I strongly believe the most important aspect of counselling is the rapport between a counsellor and client.  Developing that rapport is the primary focus of my approach.  I work from a trauma informed lens drawing from Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Complex trauma approaches, and short term solution focused therapy.

Population that I prefer working with

I enjoy working with children, adolescents and adults.  I offer individual, couple and group counselling.

Working with me, you would or learn to....

Integrate your past experiences and the messages you internalised about yourself, others and society, with your present day experiences with the goal of realising the future you desire.  I believe it is never too late to develop the skills that enable us to manage the day to day experiences that lead to stress and uncertainty.
